Mural Project

The Mural Project began as an initiative between SOCA and the ASSU (Associated Students of Stanford University) with the goal of incorporating more original art in and around campus, and giving artistic expression more attention in the Stanford community.

The first edition (see left), installed in 2002 in Tresidder, addressed the diversity and accessibility of Stanford, while fostering cooperation and ownership amongst student artists.

2005-06 saw the resurrection of The Mural Project, with a piece commissioned for the Tresidder LAIR. The mural, designed and implemented by SOCA members and volunteer student artists, depicts characters from folk tales around the world.

In 2006, SOCA members created the first Chalk Mural (see video below!). An additional Chalk Mural was created in 2010 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Language Lab.

The Mural Project is a contemporary and tangible addition to the arts at Stanford, a striking display of student collaboration through design. If you are interested in working on murals with SOCA, contact the SOCA Visual Arts Coordinator.
