Displaying Student Art
SOCA is dedicated to creating exhibition space for student artists at Stanford. Currently SOCA has three rotating gallery spaces available for students to display their work.
The Coho Gallery space was launched in Summer 2008 with support from the Stanford Institute for Creativity and the Arts (SiCa) in conjunction with the remodel and change in management of the Stanford Coffee House. The space consists of two walls surrounding the stage, and is curated and installed by the SOCA Visual Arts team throughout the year. If you are interested in having your work displayed at the CoHo, please contact the SOCA Visual Arts Coordinator.
The Gallery160 space (in Wallenberg Hall) will be opening its doors for artwork starting June 2010. The space will be co-curated by SOCA, and managed by Wallenberg Hall and the Stanford Institute for Creativity and the Arts (SiCa). Old Union is working towards building infrastructure to support more on-going exhibitions of student artwork, but currently is open to student shows. If you are interested in displaying at Old Union, please contact the SOCA Visual Arts Coordinator.
History of SOCA on Display:
The current gallery spaces evolved from the original SOCA on Display program. Launched in 2005, this project aimed to provide art gallery spaces around campus for students to showcase their creativity and artistic personalities. In Fall of 2005, SOCA enlisted the help and collaboration of Manzanita Dining Hall to serve as the pilot venue for SOCA On Display. Student artists were given the opportunity to submit works which were then professionally displayed in the dining hall. The gallery opening was kicked off with an artist reception, featuring food, music, and student performance groups. The enthusiasm of both Residential Dining Services and the student artists became quickly apparent and the program was a great success.
SOCA is currently working with the Stanford Institute for Creativity and the Arts (SiCa) to provide more display space for students, both in art department classes and otherwise.
